UNC Charlotte Student Union Building
Location:
Charlotte, NC
Project Summary
The new Student Union Building (SUB) at UNC Charlotte is a 192,000 square foot, three-story building with a partial lower. Off the Northeast corner of the SUB is the 4,000 square foot Regional Utility Plant (RUP) which is connected to the SUB by way of a pedestrian bridge that continues on to an existing parking garage. Together, the two buildings consist of 1,300 tons of structural steel. North of the SUB is a new timber bridge that spans the ravine separating the dormitories and the SUB. This timber bridge is showcased by stainless steel cable rail furnished and installed as part of the steel package. In the SUB rotunda are two monumental stairs that provide access from the first to third floors. These two stairs, along with the mezzanine and second floors, are highlighted by glass rail. Five other stairs feature cable rail similar to the timber bridge. The building skin is composed of brick, precast concrete and arched stone work to match the features of the existing buildings on campus.
