Capital City Convention Center
Location:
Jackson, MS
Project Summary
The Capital City Convention Center is the new focal point of a redevelopment movement for the downtown Jackson area. The new Convention Center boast 128,000 square feet of meeting space, which includes 60,000 square feet of exhibit hall, a 25,000 square foot ballroom, and 33,000 square feet of pre-function, lobby, and concourse space.
The exterior of the Convention Center puts to use architecturally exposed structural steel and glass framework to resemble that of a crystalline, folding glass façade. Not to be out done by the exterior beauty of the architecturally exposed structure, the designers used an exposed steel truss structure to form the backbone of the Convention Centers exhibit space. The use of 7 trusses along the length of the building allowed for an open floor plan to maximize the usage of space. Each truss weighed in excess of 120,000 pounds each and spans a clear space of 200 feet with a depth of only 18 feet. Each truss utilized a fully bolted connection design that helped add to its architectural appeal. The quantity of bolts required for each truss’ assembly alone totaled in excess of 10,000 pounds.
With the Capital City Convention Center within walking distance to many fine restaurants, hotels, historic sites, and entertainment venues available within the downtown Jackson area, it will definitely be a facility which is in high demand within the convention industry.
