Steel Service's work on this project at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility was finished in record time.

The facility is part of the new NASA Ares I shuttle project. The Ares I is a two-stage rocket that will carry the crew exploration vehicle Orion to low-Earth orbit. This rocket will succeed the space shuttle as NASA's vehicle for human exploration in the next decade.

Final assembly of the upper stage portion of the rocket will be assembled in the new Vertical and Weld Highbay Facility. This structure was erected using dual Manitowoc 888 cranes. The roof system consisted of wide flange trusses 107 feet long supported by heavy wall pipe X-bracing. This facility is 160 feet high and incorporates thousands of tons of structural steel.

The heart of America's space program, Launch Pad 39B, is better protected from lightning strikes thanks to the 1,114 tons of structural steel provided by Steel Service Corporation. Steel Service and its team detailed, procured, fabricated, painted, and delivered these extremely complicated pipe towers to the Space Center, meeting NASA's exacting schedule and budget requirements.

Spanning 80 feet at their triangular base, these three massive towers, rising over 500 feet, now stand guard to help protect the very future of our space program.
